reCaptcha switching
January 16, 2011, 06:15:33 am
I've just set up a site with lots of events. I have enabled reCaptcha for the site and am using it on all the event registration forms. As a result of difficulties reported by a couple of users my client would like to turn off the reCAptcha feature,  fearing it may be stopping or at least discouraging people from registering for events.

I have to agree with them that reCaptcha is one of the worst captcha tools I've come across fir user-friendliness, I frequently find that I have to refresh the captcha displayed - sometimes several times -in order to get one that I can see clearly enough to key in with any confidence of success. I would personally much rather deploy Mollom, as I do on Drupal forms, but for now at least that's not an available option, and I don't have the skills to change that myself.

So, two feature requests really:

  • If we have reCaptcha as our tool, can we have a global switch to turn it off and on, as I'm faced with editing every event on my site to turn it off. This could be complemented with a per event/membership/profile override option, thereby still providing the fine grained flexibility of the current arrangement.
  • Ideal world, give site builders to option of using Mollom, as noted above.

Thanks
Graham

It should, actually, be set via the Profile, not the event. Did you try to disable reCaptcha in the profile and see if that effects the event? It should.

Hi Hershel, and thanks.
As soon as I'd posted I realised that the setting was linked to the profile and not the event, which makes things simpler. However, for a site with a lot of profiles, disabling or enabling reCaptcha globally will still take some time, and so I would still support the idea of a global switch.

Would be great if you / your client can develop and/or sponsor the Mollom integration for profiles. Would be valuable to quite a few other users

You might want to post your reCaptcha feedback on the reCaptcha forums

I don't have the skills or time myself to do the development, but I would be willing to make a contribution towards paying someone who does. I can't afford to put a lot into it right now, but $100 is workable for me right now. And if there are others who also would welcome this feature we could maybe get it moving? How do we go about kicking off one of those 'Make it Happen' things?
