Membership contribution has locked contacts

Having a pretty major issue with some of our contribution pages and not completely sure what is causing it.

We have a contribution page for processing a membership that has a number of custom fields associated with the membership in the top profile along with standard contact fields for name, address, etc. All seems fine with this. However, if a user already with a contact record goes through the contribution process it freezes at the commit contribution stage and then appears to have locked that contact record. The contact can no longer update any of their details, and neither can an admin do it for them.

I'm guessing something has broken on the database, but am not sure how to identify this or fix it. Can anyone offer any advice as to how to unlock the records and prevent this from happening in future?
