Why can't I see bounces
January 20, 2011, 08:55:23 am
I can't seem to have any email address bounce. I've got a test contact with a bad email address and the email always says "Complete" and 100% delivered?

1. How can I find out if/why bounce is working properly? If I never know if an email bounced, I will not be able to reach out to contact and ask them to give us an updated email address.

2. Is there a search or report I can look at of contacts where any email bounced?

Hi,

Try this check list, but would recommend reading the chapter and be sure that's configured properly.

The intermediate step is to check if the bounce emails end up in the mail account your configured to catch them. That will help knowing if the configuration error is on the sending part or on the bounce processing part.

Thanks for the reply Xavier. I have read that post and the System Configuration manual thoroughly. They are very helpful. However, I am still missing something. When I send email to a bogus address. No bounce goes to my from email (let alone get processed by CiviCRM).

Do the following error messages from my ConfigAndLog folder help?

No, I have never been able to figure this out. My bounces go to nowhere land and always show as successfully on CiviCRM when you look at report stats on an email.

Hi,

In my experience, some SMTP provider suppresses bad email addresses (such as johndoe@example.com) and never uses the reply-to link which is part of civicrm bounce processing. Therefore you will not see it in the bounce list.

In general, the number (of bounces) will most likely not match up between your SMTP provider and CiviCRM because CiviCRM depends on a mail parsing bounce process to synchronize the bounces.

It would also be helpful to check the email address you have set up as the bounce processor to see if any error message regarding to that bad email was received but not processed. In that case it means CiviCRM did not view the message as a bounce and it needs to be added to the bounce rules.

Cheers!

I am not receiving bounces at all. I'm not yet trying to get CivicMail to parse and process them. I'm just trying to get email sent from CiviMail to generate a bounce. I have sent emails to bogus accounts and they bounce just fine when sent from Outlook or Gmail. But they don't bounce (i.e. don't show up in my reply-to account) when sent from CiviMail.

I'm assuming that's not from your production server ? the domain name shouldn't be localhost but a fully qualified one, and I'd strongly suggest to set up a SPF.

Anyway, can you read your bounce mailbox xxx@livingston.k12.mt.us ? Does it contain the bounced emails ?

It could be configuration on your SMTP end as well. Although my guess would be that CiviCRM does not listen to feedback from SMTP (means CiviCRM simply handcheck with SMTP to get authentication, sends the message to the SMTP and considers it successful delivery) but I could be wrong.

Note that civicrm does respond to smtp bounces (called fast bounces). we record it as a bounce immediately. However i think this is a very small % of total bounces
