Tags for Events, Tags for Contributions?

Hi folks,

According to Lobo this is quite a common request but I can't see much on the forums except this: http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php?topic=9508.0 so I'm interested in seeing some of people's thoughts

I'd love to see all CiviCRM entities become taggable, particularly contributions and events. I'm interested in your thoughts, existing workarounds, and tips on likely gotchas or complications in coding this up - and, if there's loads, thoughts on whether this would be a suitable Make It Happen you'd support!

First a few use cases, some immediate, some imminent, some hypothetical:

Tags in contributions:
1) An org has several projects, each with a budget and fundraising target. Some donations are unrestricted, some restricted to one or more projects or elements of a project. They already have a tag hierarchy to categorize contacts, cases etc based on projects and on child tags for elements of projects. With Contribution tags, they could easily sort donations the same way, with contribution-only tags such as 'Restricted funds', 'Unrestricted funds', 'Assigned by trustees', and so on. A fundraising person could use this at any time to easily see which projects are and aren't on course to be able to reach their targets.

2) An org has regular fundraising campaigns, each with a number of different strategies split at random to test their effectiveness. In Civi, each campaign is a tag and each strategy a sub-tag. They use this to easily categorise staff and volunteers in each push, people targetted by each push, activities and cases in each push - and also, each donation that comes out of each push, allowing them to easily generate reports comparing each strategy from each campaign, and each campaign as a whole.

Events:
1) See http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php?topic=9508.0 !

2) Similar to the cases for Contributions above: easily categorizing events that are part of a project or campaign. Who's been to events related to X project, to be considered for Y fundraising push for that same project?

Alan - I'm suspecting that the work being done in 3.4 / 4.0 to allow organizations to associate "Campaigns" with contributions, mailings, events, memberships and activities (including surveys) might meet many / most of your use cases. The specification is here:

http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-7362

Please take a look at the spec and let us know what you think. If you're comfortable running a test install from SVN - "trunk" you can also experiment with the functionality (a lot of it is coded already).

This is part of the work sponsored under the Campaign / CiviEngage Make it Happen initiative (a big chunk of which was contributed by Progressive Technology Project - YAY).
