In order to deal with duplicates created during event registration, we have changed the default strict duplicate contact matching rule to include email and first and last names.  The consequence is that now when people sign up for a mailing list (unauthenticated) it will always created a duplicate even if the contact exists.

I understand I can use profiles to do this (http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php?topic=8932.0) however this approach can only be used to subscribe to a specific group/list.  Our organization has 7 lists.

Our current subscription page (civicrm/mailing/subscribe&reset=1) lists all of these mailing lists.  We would like to keep the same form but include first and last name so that we can match contacts using the new default strict rule.

Has anyone else done this?  Can this be done with profiles still? or is it a hook/custom template resolution?

I see how that would work.  However, wouldn't you lose the subscription email confirmation notification this way?  Also - for unsubscribing - would email links work to remove a contact from those smart groups?
