HOWTO: allow CiviCRM pages to be both secured and aliased
January 28, 2011, 12:48:33 am
It is a common requirement for ...
  • Admin pages to be secured with SSL
  • CiviCRM forms to be secured with SSL
  • CiviCRM forms to have aliases (see http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,18344.0.html for a HOWTO)

Unfortunately the three modules CiviCRM, URL Aliases, and Secure Pages don't play nicely with each other. This HOWTO shows one way of resolving that. It does have two minor issues ...
  • All CiviCRM pages are secured (even Event Info pages which don't need security)
  • If you alias a CiviCRM page, you'll also need to secure the alias (an extra admin step)

In CiviCRM ...
  • Set 'Force Secure SSLs' to 'Yes' on Administer > Configure > Global Settings > Resource URLs

In URL Aliases ...
  • Set up aliases for the CiviCRM pages

In Secure Pages ...
  • Choose 'Switch back to http pages when there are no matches'
  • Choose 'Make secure only the listed pages'
  • Add 'civicrm*' to the list of pages to secure
  • Add each alias for the CiviCRM pages to the list of pages to secure
