Better Understanding "Primary"
January 28, 2011, 08:48:35 am
I'm having a hard time finding good info about the "primary" flag for contact info. A few questions:

1) I want to create a profile to send out to my board members that collects both their home and work info, but I also want to know which one they'd rather have as "primary". Is there an easy way to do this in a profile?

2) If "primary" is a flag that can be added to a particular location for a particular contact, why is it presented as a location option when you're building a profile?

3) Does "primary" (when used as a location type) default to "home" or "work"?

If someone can help me understand, I'd be happy to edit/modify/expand and add it into the documentation... I can't be the only person so easily confused... heh.

1. I dont think so :(

2. I assume you mean: why is it NOT presented as a location option when you're building a profile?

Long story short: Schema change in 2.0 and the database model changed a bit. The profile code was not upgraded to deal with this change. If you/your org would like to contribute this fix and/or sponsor someone to do so that would be great. I suspect its a 30-50 hour fix. This will involve changing some of the profile core code  a bit to match the current schema

3. This is configurable on a per site basis, check:

http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/civicrm/admin/locationType&reset=1

the default location type is used as the primary

That clears up so much for me. I never made the connection between "Default?" as a location option and Primary as a location in profiles. Thanks!
