Date added search not returning all contacts?

On drupal.demo.civicrm.org, there are 142 total contacts in the database. Running the date added custom search only returns 33 records. Is this by design?

the generated data does not create any entries in civicrm_log, hence the first 100 contacts will now show up (unless someone has edited them)
