Error 324 (net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE): Unknown error.

I am getting the following error consistently trying to import contact records from csv file.

/path/to/site/civicrm/import/contact might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.

  More information on this error
Below is the original error message

Error 324 (net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE): Unknown error.

this is the same error as reported by in this thread: http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,15844.0.html

I am new to using CiviCRM and just trying to get a database up and running as a demo/pilot. I would like some advice on how to resolve this problem - i have turned debugging on and backtrace but neither display information on screen when it fails - is there a log file I should be looking at?

Here's what I have done:
- Imported a file of 280 rows  - error occurs prior to preview
- Imported a file of 50 records - preview screen indicates all rows are ok and will be imported but next step fails with the same message. A search shows 46 records were imported.

I am using a shared hosting service called SiteGround (https://www.siteground.com/) which was set up for us by an IT company who said it would meet our needs - could this hosting be the problem with some sort of timeout?

Any help would be appreciated.

Phil
