how do i read mailbox.ignored?
January 30, 2011, 04:34:24 pm
Help!!!

I've done a major ****up and processed all mailboxes, or at least three very important ones and moved most of their inboxes into mailbox.ignored

How do I read these?

I know where they are on the server, but of course they are not directories in the usual manner, so how do I get to look at them?

Better still how do I move the contents back to where they should be?

Myles,

Does your email client support IMAP and can you connect to the mailbox?

On my mail server, the 'ignored' folder is called .INBOX.CiviMail.ignored and my email client shows the folder tree as

+ Inbox
   + CiviMail
      - ignored
      - processed

When I click on 'ignored' I can see all the emails in there. I am able to move emails to other locations.

So if you open the 'ignored' folder and the source folders using IMAP, you should be able to retrieve all your email. Unfortunately you'll have to separate by hand the emails into the original 3 folders!

Hi,

You should have all the emails in the ignored folder and none in the processed for the wrong mailboxes. If you are using IMAP, you should be all good.

Using your IMAP mail client, you can select them and move them back to the inbox. (obviously after having taken them out of the civi config so they aren't processed again).

Many thanks for your replies, I feel much encouraged..

I am experiencing a bad case of ignorance - yes I have an IMAP client, but I don't know what configuration to give it to connect to the mailboxes that civicrm has created....

The mailboxes are in a subdirectory of the civicrm directory within sites/default/files rather than within the mail server.

The original mailboxes sit on a different server and domain to the civicrm installation.

The email configuration in civiCRM was set to POP, which I have now changed to IMAP - I'll address the configuration again once I have recovered the emails people are screaming about!

By changing permissions on the folders I can access and read the messages as text files - but there is just one big bucket of messages that have numbers for file-names with no separate folders for the different sources and no useful filenames.

the bucket would normally be called a folder by name of cur - example message path and file:

sites/default/files/civicrm/custom/CiviMail.ignored/2011/01/30/cur/54791-1296424037-1

Do you have control over the IMAP server? You could set it to use the sites/default/files/civicrm/custom directory as it's Maildir.

If not, you could set up an IMAP server on a test machine, copy the directories there, and use your IMAP client to move files from your test IMAP server back to your real one.

Argl, with pop it means that you can' leave the mails on the server, so civi downloads them (never used it in that configuration myself).

Looks like it's a Maildir format. I would think that some mail clients can read it directly (on linux at least I'm pretty sure). Do google it.

Try to copy that in your local machine and to read it. Another joy of POP is that it's likely every mailbox is mixed indeed, but shouldn't be too complicated to untangle if you can read it.

Good luck.

PS. or if you have a local linux, you can use dovecot, easy to configure imap server that handles maildirs. Bit more guru level.

So, thanks to you guys I feel like a real hero human again!

I created a mail account on the civiCRM server then navigated to the imap folder on the server (it is our VPS so I can) then down into the cur directory of the account I've just created and... copied the files from sites/default/files/civircm/custom etc.../cur

Connected with my IMAP client (Evolution in my case) then, using the search facilities to list the mail sent to one user at a time, moved the emails across to their rightful places.

Phew

Thank you very much!
