Question about mass updating postal addresses for NCOA
January 30, 2011, 07:24:12 pm
I've tried googling the forums and the 'net in general for some kind of discussion on this and I can't find any lengthy discussions.  I have not installed CiviCRM yet but I plan to.  I have in the neighborhood of 60,000 records and I want to be able to do regular national change of address comparisons on the data.

That is going to require me to do mass updates on existing data in the database.  How does civiCRM handle this kind of bulk change of address on existing records?

Is this a common feature request that is actually supported natively somehow?

This has not come up in a long time :) I dont think there is support for this in the current code base. There is integration with the USPS web service system that also does something similar

However, there is a script called bin/UpdateAddress.php which is a command line script that call and external webservice to geocode all addresses in the system. Modifying this script to call the NCOA web service (or use a csv file) and update the address should not be too hard for someone with php/mysql/civicrm skills

if you do so, please share your changes so others can benefit

thanx

I've written up some thoughts here: http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRM/Change+of+Address+Updates

And in further trying to understand how email and snail addresses are updated along with their communication preferences, I did some testing and derived these Address Update Rules http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRM/Address+Update+Rules (which I hope are correct!).
