Need a log to prove we're not spamming
December 18, 2007, 03:41:05 pm
We're using an external mailing service to send out our e-mails. We've been blocked, and now we've been told we need to provide a log that shows people sign up for our list and we're not purchasing lists.

How do we go about pulling this information so we can show this? Of course some names will show they were imported, since we do hold events and those addresses are added to the list.

This is always a frustrating thing with campaigns, as people think it is funny to subscribe to a list and then report it as spam so that they can hinder your communication efforts.

I don't really blame the mailing service for trying to prevent spam, but I can't help wondering if you are using the right service.  Which one are you using?  Two of my clients use Vertical Response where you can import anything you want.  Also, are you considering CiviMail, either on your server or on a hosted environment?

As for logs - what would be in the log?  There is a file that contains the change log - I'm not sure what information is captured .... Oh heck, let me look now that you have me interested ...  there is a file civicrm_log that contains a list of who created or modified the record - not much there, but might help.

They're using Constant Contact.

We had tried CiviMail on the hosted server, but obviously that didn't work. I'd recommended using the CiviSMTP option when that came available, but they went with Constant Contact.

I don't know all the details of the conversation between them and CC. I just got the e-mail asking for logs so we could show that people were indeed signing up for the e-mail and that we weren't buying lists. But how could you prove that e-mails imported that came from meetings, rallies, fundraisers, etc. weren't bought? They'd all be imported.

This is the first time I've ever run into the issue where we've been asked to prove such a thing.

You can potentially use the information is:

civicrm_group_contact
civicrm_mailing_event_subscribe

to figure out who belongs to what group and what subscription event (if any) triggered this addition
