Why not integrate CiviCRM into a Bitnami stack?
February 03, 2011, 11:53:01 am
I'm an IT guy, but I confess that installing CiviCRm is a bit of a hassle. It shouldn't be. This situation might even be hampering a quicker adoption of Civi among NGOs that don't have a volunteer IT guy available.

Upgrading Civi is also a problem - more than 12 careful steps. Can it be done in a simpler fashion, like an .exe or a script?

Bitnami (bitnami.org) could be the ideal solution, at least for first installs. It already provides a complete software stack for many packages, like SugarCRM. It offers easy deployments downloads in native (Win, Linux, OSX), virtual (VMware) or cloud (EC2) formats.

Thanks for the attention.

Agreed. Would make install a lot easier.

Would you be interested in helping with this and figuring out whats needed and what needs to be done. We'd be glad to assist and get you going on IRC: http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=#civicrm

Sorry, Lobo, but I don't have the skills.
Maybe the guys at Bitnami could help you out on that.

OTOH, since I'm the one proposing and the most interested in it - so far - I'm willing to donate a reasonable sum to make it happen quickly.

Is it fair?

Andre

if you can check with the guys at bitnami that would be great :)

depends on what reasonable sum amounts to :) In general without even getting into bitnami details, i'd suspect it would be between 20-50 hours. Our consulting rates and contract are on the wiki
