Custom Fields - decision tree functionality?
February 03, 2011, 12:10:09 pm
Is there a way yet to create custom fields that allow for a 'decision tree' (I don't know if this is the correct terminology...)?  For example, if a person clicks "yes" to answer a question, no further input is required, but if he or she answers "no" another field will appear.

I've searched the forum for a while and have seen a number of other questions similar to this, but they are all from 2-3 years ago and dealt with versions earlier than 3.x.  The answers were all "no", but I cannot determine if anything has changed, and if it has, how to implement this functionality.

I've been researching CiviCRM's suitability for the organization I am working with for a couple months, but have just started testing it over the last few days.  I am very impressed so far, and this is one of the only things I've tried to do that I haven't been able to find an answer for.  Thank you all very much for all the work done thus far to develop this excellent application, as well as for any help you can provide in getting it up and running for us!

Edited to add:  Another acceptable solution would be for an answer of "yes" to auto-populate the field that would appear for those who answer "no" with a pre-determined value...  - Thanks again.

support for this does not exist by default.

However you can implement your "Another acceptable solution" with a customized template and some jQuery magic. Check:

http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC33/Customizing+CiviCRM+Screens

on how to customize templates.

Thank you very much for such a quick reply!

Anything beyond simple shell scripting surpasses my current skills, but I will definitely be coming back to the link you posted as soon as the first couple stages of this project are complete.  It seems like something pretty basic, so I look forward to tackling it.

Thanks again.
