Hi I am trying to setup a spf record for civimail, I am using civismpt I have configured  all the information apart from the IP address. Can you tell me how to set this up so that I can send out emails with spf configured properly.

Ps. I am using the openspf wizard.

You need to be able to change your DNS records.

Have you tried the tools at http://www.openspf.org and http://civismtp.org ?

The CiviSMTP folks suggest you set up MX records that identify CiviSMTP servers as sending emails for your domain ( http://civismtp.org/drupal/node/1 currently lists these servers as civismtp.uas.coop, civismtp2.uas.coop, and civismtp3.uas.coop )

The wizard at OpenSPF says my SPF record in this case should be ...

example.com. IN TXT "v=spf1 mx ~all"

Once your DNS records include MX records identifying those CiviSMTP servers, you can set up an SPF record in your DNS and test using the tools on the OpenSPF site.

Provided you test when you're not sending real emails, you can set up and tear down an SPF record until you get it right.

in case anybody needs the IP address for setting up spf records you can always look it up in the mx records:

http://www.mxtoolbox.com/SuperTool.aspx?action=mx%3acivismtp.uas.coop

Shane,

The MX Toolbox tool at http://www.mxtoolbox.com/SuperTool.aspx is very nice. Thanks for the tip.

What's interesting is that the tool only lists one domain, while CiviSMTP's site lists 3.

Rather than looking up domains and IP addresses, perhaps the better option is to use the SPF flag "mx:civismtp.uas.coop"

As I understand it,
  • "mx" in the SPF text means "it is valid for domains named in my site's MX records to send email for my domain".
  • "mx:civismtp.uas.coop" in the SPF text means "it is valid for domains named in civismtp.uas.coop's MX records to send email for my domain".

( So my organisation's SPF record uses "mx" as we're running our own mail server. Folks using civismtp.uas.coop to send emails would use "mx:civismtp.uas.coop". )
