civimail questions when upgrading to 3.2.4
February 10, 2011, 11:16:56 am
Hello everyone,

I upgraded my site recently to CiviCRM 3.2.4 and sent out our monthly member newsletter this week. I then found I had to upgrade the scripts for sending mail and handing responses (bounces, unsubscribe requests etc). I think I did this successfully, however I have two questions:

1) as indicated in the attached screenshot, the bounce stats are inaccurate. I think this may be related to me having to move mail from one mailbox to another and the script having handled the same messages multiple times. Does the civimail bounce handling not track message ID numbers to make sure it does not incorrectly record duplicate bounces?

2) previously there were "civicrm->ignored" and "civicrm->processed" subfolders so I could still look at mail that had been handled by the scripts. these seem to be not showing up anymore - the messages are just being deleted from the mailbox. Any way to change this?

Thanks much,

Tobias

hey tobias:

1. no, civimail does not track message IDs, and hence can potentially process the same message twice if things have been moved etc

2. the ignored/processed seem to be under the CiviMail folder (i dont think this changed). I'm pretty sure we dont delete the messages, so if u can track that down a bit more that would be great

thanx

Thanks Lobo and Xavier - I just sent out another newsletter last Tuesday and there is no sign of new mail in the civimail>processed and civimail>ignored folders since before the upgrade. The bounces/opens stats make more sense this time around.

I had indeed changed mailboxes with the upgrade and copied the folders over from the old mailbox using mozilla thunderbird. In case the problem of mail not being saved has something to do with the copying I will now delete the folders and see if the script automatically generates them and uses them for saving processed and ignored mail. Let me know if this is wrong or if I'm missing something here.

As regards #1 - tracking of clicks - I will have to pay more attention to the "unique clicks" in the reports and treat the other opens column differently.. if someone appears to have opened it dozens or hundreds of times then it probably means s/he has shared it with someone else or posted it on the web someplace. That is okay with me but something I have to keep in mind. :) Would be interesting to find a way to analyze that ratio of unique clicks and derive some conclusions from it over time, eg that the newsletter is being shared widely and who the people are who are sharing it most. Meanwhile, the tracking of opens loses its meaning since it's not unique opens - pity.

Cheers,

Tobias

would be a good feature add to the reports to also show the number of "unique" opens/clicks.

that way if there is a significant difference people can draw their own conclusions :)

thanks, lobo!

Civimail reports already indicate unique clicks for links, but not for opens. So it appears that when someone posts mailings to the web and people visit those pages, even spiders etc, the open count will go up. So having a unique open count would be a useful feature.

Cheers,

Tobias
