Civimember: more control of source of membership
December 20, 2007, 05:55:48 pm
Request

In civimember the source of the membership is a free text field.

Membership sources are often: newsletter-, radio-, mailing campaigns or other specific activities, coded bij a specific code. When it is a free text field, the text for the same campaign is depending of the user and probably not always the same. The results of searches are bad, and follow up membership campaigns (like email newsletters or premiums) are not acurate.

It would be better to make a list of sources per membership type, witch shows up in a drop down menu or dojo drop down, in the source field.

Don't delete the free text field: change the name 'source' in 'comments', 'note' or 'remarks'

For online membership signup, we currently set the source to a fixed string plus the "title" of the contribution page. For example:

Online Contribution: Winter Membership Drive

So we would need to get some more input as to whether this behavior should be replaced with your suggested approach? OR does the drop-down get used just for memberships entered by staff? I could also imagine that in an online context - you'd want to ask the constituent for the "source".

Of course - I think adding a custom membership field with the desired options, and putting it on the online signup form - as well as including it in the back-end "add membership" form - would work pretty nicely. You could set the field as "Searchable" etc.

Yes, what I meant is that the source of the membership is predefined in the setup of the membership by an admin (staff).
In online signups the constituent can pick his source out of the list,  a (staff)member can do the same when sign up is made by the organisation.

Like I said, this has advantages when follow up activities must be made, depending on a membership source.
For example: A promotion for a membership in 2 different (email)newsletters or paper magazines, with a different premium. When subscribing for a membership the constituent also fills in the source. This could be the newslettername or a code found in the specific newsletter. (Each newsletter has is own code). With this code the follow up (premium) handling can be done. With the source field as a text string the content of the source field for the same newsletter/code can be different. When the source is predefined the risk for a type error is zero.
