What is the best way to do a clean install of CiviCRM and not lose current data?
February 14, 2011, 08:48:27 am
Hey Guys,

I'm in need of doing a fresh install of CiviCRM because of a situation where our site was hacked.  Want to make sure that everything is clean but I don't want to lose all of the years of work in our client database.

Can someone walk me through this.

Thanks for your help and God Bless.

Stacy

I don't quite follow your question. A fresh install means an empty database. To do that, just follow the installations directions http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC33/Installation+and+Upgrades

If you want to then use your database (presuming it was not corrupted somehow), then after you install fresh, you can use the migration procedure described here http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC32/Moving+an+Existing+Installation+to+a+New+Server+or+Location

But this all depends on what it means that your site "was hacked." If the PHP files were hacked, then just upload a fresh copy that it all that it necessary.

Can you clarify what you mean?

The site was hacked and some malicious code has been hidden in a database and even after the offending files are found a reload of the site was causing the code to be rewritten and placed back into the site.  We have completely rebuilt the site accept for civiCRM and are about to go live with the new site.

What is the best way to save all the information we have gathered through CiviCRM to the point and migrate it fresh to the new servers?

I want to do this as cleanly as possible because I do not know which database files have been corrupted.   Is there a way to export the CiviCRM Data from the current site and then import it into the new CiviCRM install I'm about to create on the new site?

I hope that better explains what's going on and what I'm needing to do.

Thanks,
Stacy

Yes, most data can be exported using CiviCRM's built in export tools. Some items may not be, but those should be small and redoable. The main Contact data you can export and then import into a new site, yes.

I would also consider a new host, if your previous one has not proven to be sufficiently secure.

Thank you for your help.  I've already moved to a more secure host.  I have to take the blame for some of the problems because of holes that I left open in joomla.

If you don't mind can you walk me through the process of exporting and importing the data?  Even if it is in the manual.  I've really been struggling with this rebuild and I'm just a little overwhelmed with this entire process at the moment.

Thank you for your help.

Stacy
