Proximity Search Civi Contacts in Drupal
February 15, 2011, 03:32:25 am
I have created a view that allows the general public to locate members of an organization by searching the CiviCRM contact information and custom profile fields. Exposed fields allow basic searches by name and area of specialty. They would also like to add a proximity search so that people can find a member within X miles of the person searching. I see that CiviCRM has a built in proximity search, but I am not sure how, or if it is possible, to expose that via views. Is that the best way to go, or is there another way to make it work.

I really appreciate your input.

I'd also be really keen to know if this can be done for events, using Drupal Views. Here's hoping...

Best,

might want to take a look at something like this:

http://drupal.org/project/openlayers_proximity

and then adapt it to use the geocoding information from the relevant entries in the civicrm_address table.

If you do so, please publish your module so others can benefit

Does anyone think it will be possible to use this to identify those who live in remote areas?

The business case would be to identify those who live in more remote areas of a constituency. Such people would be added on to mailshots, while supporters could hand deliver the rest.
