RTF/HTML emails & attachments
December 21, 2007, 12:03:34 pm
  • Is there a way I could use HTML format for sending e-mails to my contacts? I guess it could be possible by installing TinyMCE as a module for my Drupal installation.
  • If HTML emails are possible, I could only use images that are already available through http protocol (no embedding). Correct? In other words, is there a way to send for example attachments by e-mail?
  • Is it the same answer for CiviMail?

Hi madjoe

It does seem a little strange that CiviMail allows HTML emails, but "Send Email To Contacts" does not.  But then "Send Email To Contacts" does not have a feature to limit the number of emails either.  I guess if you were assume that all contacts could receive HTML you could either code the html or place a JavaScript editor on the text field.

As for attachments the strategy seems to be to allow high volumes of emails, where attachments would not be advisable other than by links to a website.

However, an option like our old system had would be nice where we had a button that stuffed all the email addresses into a bcc mailto button which launched our own email client would be extremely helpful when sending low volumes to selected people with attachments.  I'm forever generating reports from CiviCRM, creating PDFs, putting the email addresses in my local email client address book and sending low volume emails with attachments.   The Recipients for the "Send Mail to Contacts" can almost be copy and pasted, but it is not in the right format for my email client.

For images, remember that the later versions of some email clients like Outlook Express, have show images off by default, which is how I run, so images are not pulled in from the websites.  Also, inline images seem to be mostly spam.

Couple things on these posts:

1) The "Send Email to Contacts" tool was not intended for high volume bulk emails, which is why the features are more limited. CiviMail in 1.9 has a wysiwyg toolbar and was intended for large volume emails.

2) Send Email to Contacts DOES allow you to send html emails, IF you create an email template and send to the contacts using that template. However -- I believe the html template tool was broken in 1.8 and am not sure if it was corrected for 1.9 (it would send the text version regardless of the user preference settings).

3) You cannot embed images in CiviMail 1.9, but there is a snappy little button on the wysiwyg toolbar that makes image linking a little easier.
