Search by email impossible once Indivudual record fully populiated, why?

We finally arrived at what exactly does not work with CiviCRM and trying to find contacts via email address.

Some records arrived in CiviCRM with only the email address filled in on the CiviCRM side. We then manually edit the Individual record and fill in the rest of the contact information.

Once that has been done, we are unable to search \ find contacts via the email address! Even though the search \ find contacts interface states "Name or Email"

I just worked through these exact steps:

1) Took an Individual that ONLY had their email addy filled in. I was able to look up this Individual via searching for "seuss" which is part of their email user name - the part before the @ sign.
2) Filled in the remainder of the contact information
3) Returned to the Find Contacts interface, again entered "seuss", and got no search results back. Searching for their last name, however, does now work.

So it is like searching for email addy's only works when no other fields are filled in. Once the other field(s) are filled in, searching via email address breaks.

WHY!?!?!?  :'(

Check on the administration menu, you are likely to have disabled the search on email.

Enable it again at it will work.

(the label doesn't match the real underlining setting, known issue, not sure if it has been  added to the Issue tracker)

Greetings xavier,

The first place I thought to look was:
/civicrm/admin/setting/preferences/display&reset=1
"Settings - Site Preferences"

Looking promising as I see "Contact Search". No check box for "Email" however.

The only two which are unchecked were "Relationships" and "PledgeBank". So I checked those two, saved, searched for "seuss" and yet "no results found".

Aaaahhhh....
/civicrm/admin/setting/search?reset=1
"Settings - Contacts Search"

Indeed the radio button for "Include Email" was set to "No". Adjusting that to "Yes" resolved the troubles.

Aaaakkk, in 3.3.5 this is again broken same as when I last posted.

At /civicrm/admin/setting/search&reset=1 Include Email is set to Yes.

Did something get broken in 3.3.5?

Not to my knowledge, but the upgrade did reset some of the custom configuration (bug, fixed if I recall).

Try to reproduce on demo.civicrm.org

And when in doubt, clear the cache (sounds very lame tech support "you have to reboot your windows machine, sir") ;)

Seems broken there too.

Test recreate:
1) Search for contact "test." and nothing comes up

Should pull up:
"Ms. Test Case" which has email addy "test.case@testing.co.uk"

Note: "" quotes not included in what I typed in, just trying to clarify what I DID type in.
I tried searching in the top/left search field to the left of the Civi menu.

The "Include Email " was already set to "Yes".

aaahhh, it does pull up IF I press enter after "test." but it does not have the drop down hint suggestion.

And yes our 3.3.5 installation works the same.

So, request: Could the drop down suggestion list (lookup-as-you-type) also query the email field, and not just when you press enter?
