Is CiviCRM appropriate for my project that will require an emphasis on leads?
February 22, 2011, 03:56:07 pm
Hey folks, embarking on a major project and need to get some feedback on if CiviCRM can handle this or not and if I might be better off going with SugarCRM.

First, I'm very much partial to Drupal and CIVI's excellent integration is a huge factor, I'm just concerned it may not quite cover all of my needs.  The site will be for a non-profit and the front end of the site will already be running on Drupal.

What I need from civic CRM: We need to generate leads and will have telemarketers warm-calling from compiled lists.  They will record the answers to these surveys as captured leads which will be disseminated amongst users based on privileges and a specific criteria (proximity).

I'm a little fuzzy on how Civi handles leads and whether a significant amount of customization would be required.  Someone mentioned that a civicrm user can "easily model these attributes w/ "Tags" or "Groups" or custom fields +  smart groups (saved searches)."  I'm a civi noob and am willing to put some time into figuring this out, as long as I really can get there from here.  Any hints on how to proceed?  Do I need add on modules for Civi to do this?  Or am I better trying another solution like Sugar.

Sorry to be so ignorant, I bet a lot of these points are really obvious to a lot of you.  Thanks and best,
Patrick M.

Hi,

Look at the civicampaign module, that's for canvassing, should be able to help you. Civi doesn't have a notion of leads by default, you might want to put these contacts in a group "lead", or a subtype of individuals.

Might want to browse the book to get a better sense of what civi can do: http://en.flossmanuals.net/CiviCRM

Might want to compare a bit more with sugar, could be better suited indeed.

CiviCampaign's feature set is growing and improving over the past few releases. The upcoming 3.4/ 4.0 release will include 1 or 2 reports designed to support canvassing (field-based walklists and phonebanking). The component allows you to segment the DB and then assign segments to a particular "interviewer".

As the newest component in Civi, I would say it's still a bit "rough around the edges" and not well documented yet - but may well meet your needs enough that it's worth your organization putting some additional resources into to. I don't know how Sugar might support these workflows so can't compare fit.

Donald Lobo is currently using it for a school auction solicitation phonebank project and it seems to be working well. Progressive Technology Project is also using earlier versions w/ a number of their grassroots organizing projects and is actively involved and sponsoring improvements / additional features.
