What CiviGrant is capable?
February 25, 2011, 01:31:11 pm
Hi,

I read about drupal and now civiCRM. So I am new and please bear with me.

We need a web application that can help us distribute (dual enrollment) scholarship. Students can apply for it through high school consular. Consular will create account for students and students will fill out the form and upload needed documents. Colleges will be notified and login to verify their students. Our financial aid manager will go through each application and verify all upload documents are correct and will then mark as approved.

Can you provide inputs on how much code I will need to do to make this feasible?

Thanks.

Duncan

Hi,

I post the question because I was not able to find much info about the civiGrant. I did run into discussions about civiGrant and civiCase. Which is why I posted here.

Now after I read a bit of the civiCase, it seems it's possible. Can anyone give me a sign if my idea is workable? Any suggestion in steps to take are greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Duncan

might want to read this blog post:

http://civicrm.org/blogs/planigan/enhanced-grant-tracking-civigrant-vs-civicase
http://civicrm.org/blogs/colemanw/pushing-envelope-civicase

and this chapter on CiviCase:

http://en.flossmanuals.net/CiviCRM/WhatisCiviCase

CiviCRM/CiviCase has a fair amount of what you need. I do think there will be some custom code needed. Your next step would be to install and play around with it to get an idea of what can be done

Hi!

I am also considering using CiviGrant or CiviCase for scholarships but I can't find much information about CiviGrant. I can't find it on civicrm.org among the other modules (CiviCase,CiviContribute....) and flossmanuals doesn't mention it. On the wiki is not much to be found and the things I find is often a couple of years old. Are you guys thinking/planning on replacing CiviGrant with functionallity in CiviCase?

I mean if I were to plan on long term for my customer is it wise to choose CiviGrant? Or should I go with CiviCase because it seems to have a (much?) brighter future?

I have seen that I can create online forms with CiviCRM profiles that automatically creates activities (and contacts if needed). Can I do the same thing for CiviGrant - build an online application form that creates CiviGrant records? I can't choose CiviGrant fields when I add a field to a profile. Can this be done in some other way?

To create online application forms, you might want to try using the webform + civirm module. Does not use civigrant, but does a fair amount. Check colemanw's blog posts:

http://civicrm.org/blogs/colemanw/civicrm-and-webform-module-together-last

Currenly you cannot expose civigrant fields via a profile. It is not currently on the short/medium term priority list (for us).

Ok, thanks a lot for the info!

I think I'll start with CiviGrant + some custom fields because it seems much simpler to implement. Then if my client isn't satisfied I will move to CiviCase. Is it much work to build my own application form that creates CiviGrant records? Perhaps via some API Or reuse and modify some .tpl and .php files from the source code?

If my client really want an online application form for the scholarships maybe I should go with Civicase right from the start and create the application form with exposed activity fields via a profile. But then my client have to file the activities in a case manually, or?

I have a hard time making a desicion here. Has anybody created an online application form for grants or scholarships?
