Upgrade neglected version 1.9
February 26, 2011, 01:33:57 am
I have inherited a CiviCRM version 1.9.  I have looked at the install instructions and the suggestion is to first upgrade to 2.2 but the download has been taken off sourceforge.  Any suggestions? is it possible to do a fresh install and transfer the data?

Yes it is possible to export your data and then import into a fresh install. But all old versions of CiviCRM are available for download. See here:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/civicrm/files/civicrm-stable/

and just scroll down until you find 2.2.

This is either a problem with file permissions in Linux or with the settings in sites/default/civicrm.settings.php. Try to open file permissions more var/vhosts/fern.org.au/civicrm_files/templates_c/ first I think.

Ah, someone else still on version 1.9 ?? I have several newer version installations running, but our big one is still on version 1.9.   How did you do, did you successfully move to the current version?

We've looked at exporting and importing and also upgrading.   Also there is a utility mentioned that might help, but I couldn't seem to get it to run.

Export and Import
- - - - - - - - - - - - --
Maybe worth considering.

Cons *********
Newer versions seem to let more records being exported at a time.  The distasteful part for us is that we have quite a few custom fields as well as smart groups.  Also we have used the membership and contribution module.    So if we import then new internal_contact_ids will be created so some amount of manipulation on membership and contribution module records will be needed.

Pros****************
It would be easy to install on a different domain and not risk the production database.

Upgrading
= = = = = = = = =
The prospect of upgrading version by version from 1.9 to what? until we can jump to the current version is not inviting.   We now have over 3 million records for only 9,000 contacts.  We are using the site utility to back the MySQL up because too big for PhpMyAdmin.    I'm not sure if we could reload on a server.   Locally, I have been able to strip out the big activity files, but not sure of ramifications.

I would definitely like to talk with anyone upgrading from 1.9 or that has upgraded multiple versions from 1.9.

Anyone have a utility they'd like to sell?

Why can't you upgrade to the latest version?

You'd need probably to go through several intermediate versions, but doing a 1.9->2.2->3.3.5 might be good enough (you'll have to look at the various instructions for older versions, not sure how many intermediate versions you'll be able to skip over, but quite a few)

You raise a good point. The prospects of upgrading with 2 steps is quite a bit different than all the versions.  I have not seen other information about what upgrade versions are required:  When considering an upgrade in the past, I've looked no farther than the upgrade issues in this forum (great to have the forum) and I know they may be special cases, but the prospects seemed daunting.  Combine that with our large file sizes and .... we're still on 1.9 for for our main installation.   I've wondered if the database upgrade scripts could be pulled out and run separately from the full installations.

hi,

not sure how to check without looking at the upgrade scripts, but at least from 3 to 3,3.5 that's one step.

No matter what, you will have to bite the bullet and upgrade. Think about all the nice features and better UI, and that your users will be happier ;)

I'd copy the db locally, and do the various updates locally. Once you got it upgraded, download again the db, freeze it explain to the users that it's read only for the next few hours and run the upgrades again, on the code you have previously used for the upgrades.

Good luck!

I would also update it. Without question. Go through the steps once, "by the book" on a backup copy of the databases, and if all goes well, then do it for real.

I went nearly though as much upgrading as you are facing. We were on D5 / Civi 2.0.x

Make FULL BACKUPS of your site prior to starting.

Then get Drupal completely upgraded and happy. That was a big task for us as our former server was not adequate to run our domain configuration with D6 code... so we had to migrate / upgrade to a VPS hosting solution.

Mack backups of at least Civi at each stop Civi forces you to stop at. I had to do our upgrade TWICE as I did not make backups along the way and the final Civi upgrade caused an issue sending me back to where I started.

For us I recall needing to upgrade to the latest in 2.1.x series, then 2.2.x series, and then move to 3.2.x which was bleeding edge at that time. 3.2.1 might have been the version that bit us... 'tis been a while.

I read through the upgrade doc for each major release of CiviCRM between 2.0.x and the then stable 3.2.x. Each upgrade doc specifies the prerequisite to upgrade to that version. So for us it was...

For example, inside this document:
http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC21/Upgrade+Drupal+Sites+to+2.1
is found the text:
Quote
Upgrading from a version prior to 2.0? First upgrade to 2.0 using these instructions.

Thus you will need to include upgrading from 1.9.x to 2.0.x in your upgrade path.

I think from there, same as for us:
  • Latest in 2.1.x series
  • Latest in 2.2.x series
  • From which you may jump directly to the latest in 3.3.x series
Does this make sense?

<><><>

Also before tinkering with any Civi upgrades, you will need to be on Drupal 6 rather than Drupal 5. So leave the Civi mod(s) turned off until you get that taken care of and stable.

version 1.9 best upgrade path
April 09, 2011, 07:45:00 am
So from version 1.9 would this be the best upgrade path?

CiviCRM 1.9 - Drupal 5.3
CiviCRM 2.0 - Drupal 6
CiviCRM 2.1 - Drupal 6
CiviCRM 2.2 - Drupal 6
CiviCRM 3.3.6 (or latest) - Drupal 6
CiviCRM 4.0 beta3 (or latest) - Drupal 7

That looks reasonable, yes. Might want to wait until 4.0 is stable however for that step. :)

And take a backup of the web hosting space and database after each successful Civi upgrade.

I did not do that many incremental backups when I did the D5->D6 upgrade, and the upgrade from 2.2.x to 3.x (which ever version I was landing at back then) trashed the DB doing the 2.2.x to 3.x upgrade. I had to completely roll back to D5 and Civi 2.0.7!!!  :o
