Date Sorting in Reports

I have a date column in a report and I find oddly that the dats seem to sort around Month and not year.  So if I have a report that spans this year and one month of last year it automaitcally throws last years date to the bottom.  this is fin but if I am looking for a chronogical perspective they should be at the top.  Additionally the Dates within a month dont sort in order either... so Jan 10 2011 doesnt show up before jan 21 2011

How can I fix this?

Probably by implementing function orderBy( )  you can do this ( @see: CRM/Report/Form/Contact/Summary .php  ).
Is it already existing report or your custom report?
