Log activity via email?

Does CiviCRM have any kind of mechanism to update the database via email? I've used a CRM before that allowed you to BCC or forward email correspondence to a designated email address. If the email in the To: field matches a contact record, the communication is logged in the activity stream. If a match isn't found then a new contact record is created.

If this feature does not exist or can't be easily added on, you can consider this a feature request.
