Outbound Email - Save & Send Test Email not saving info and goes to blank page.

In trying to set the outbound email settings I enter the SMTP settings and click on "Save & Send Test Email".  It then goes to a blank HTTP 500 Internal Server Error page.  Funny thing is it does send a test email and the test email says the SMTP settings are correct but these settings are not saved and I cannot get them to save.  Is there a way that I can enter the SMTP settings directly into the database using phpmyadmin?  If so where does it go and what should the data entry look like?

Any help would be appreciated as we have a conference coming up.

Check server error log and Civi error log.   Confirm your host allows outgoing.

You could also of course try one of the other mailing methods, even if just to see that they work.

Thanks for the replies.  I am running this install on a windows 2008 server.  I have tried the other methods with no success.  With the other methods is there any other settings or changes I have to make to either PHP or IIS to get it to work?

Most of us here don't have a lot of experience with Windows servers but mail() is a PHP function and should work on any server. Does Drupal send emails?

Ask your sys admin for help to get mail() to work I would suggest.

Thanks for the replies that have pointed me in the right direction.

I have managed to get this working after a lot of trial an error.  I had to go and install and configure SMTP as a server role in Windows Server 2008 then set up the smtp settings in civicrm.
