Dedupe - can't merge any contacts

3.4.alpha2 (reproducible on the 3.4 Drupal sandbox)

When I attempt to merge any two contacts, I get the error 'Sorry. A non-recoverable error has occurred. The main contact record does not exist'

It happens when I'm on the page Home › CiviCRM › Find and Merge Duplicate Contacts (URL = /civicrm/contact/dedupefind?reset=1&action=update&rgid=8), and I try and merge contacts with Id's 8455 and 9173. The URL for the merge link is ...

/civicrm/contact/merge?reset=1&cid=8455&oid=9173&action=update&rgid=8

... and I get the error when I click on that link (or any other 'merge' link). ( The contacts 8455 and 9173 both exist and are accessible. )
