Send multiple bulk emails to single contact's multiple email addresses
March 11, 2011, 11:48:50 am
Hi All,

Quoting the Help for the 'Bulk Mailings?':

"If you are using the CiviMail component to send mailings to contacts, this field provides additional control over which email address is used. By default, CiviMail sends mail to each contact's preferred email address. If the contact has multiple locations, then the preferred email of the primary location is used. However, if the contact prefers to have CiviMail ('bulk') mailings set to an alternate email address - check the 'Use for Bulk Mailings' box next to that email address."

That sounds like you can send 1 bulk email to 1 email address associated with an individual.

Is there a way to send a single contact, who has multiple email addresses, the same bulk email to all of their email addresses?

Is the only (klunky) solution to create dummy contacts with the additional email address and add them to the group?

Thanks,
Gingerfeet

The other clunky way I can think of is doing something that creates problems elsewhere, namely, set multiple locations as Primary for the individual - this will cause reporting problems for the individual - ie they will get exported/listed multiple times, one per Primary Location.
But if your 'need to mail to all their emails' is more important it may be a work around - but requires DB access to get in and 'incorrectly' set multiple Locations.
i am only suggesting this as i know that people having Multiple Primary Locations, causes problems ;-) - one of which I believe is them receiving multiple emails

Hi,

Following Pete idea and assuming you are not afraid of dirt, you might try setting (in the db directly) multiple emails from the same contacts as "use for bulk mailing".

Likely to generate interesting side effects, eg. in the reporting.

X+

P.S. As an aside, I'm puzzled by people willing to receive more duplicate emails. I'm in a quest for the opposite ;)

i was assuming it is the case that John needs to get emails for himself personally but also needs to get them as the Head of Xavierisation at CiviCorp.

Use case is exactly as petednz says. One email needs to go to personal yahoo.com account, second needs to go to director@example.org.

I don't really want to set up a dummy individual "director" who has a relationship with the "example" organization, when that individual's sole reason to exist is to recieve emails--when it is really "John" who is the director for the "example" org, and John wants both emails.

I'll try poking around in the DB and see what I can break...

Hi GingerFeet,

Have you got any workaround for this problem? I am in the same situation and I need to send bulk emails to more than one email address per contact.

Even worse, I have one primary email address and two other email addresses stored as custom fields, that's fine I think as I will have to move them to different types of emails for each contact.

Please respond if you have got any solution for this.

Thanks a lot.

Hello

We have the same problem - we have multible emails for a contact, and all emails need to receive the same mailing... What to do? Can the developers help?

Best

You will need to check and fix the queries here:

CRM/Mailing/BAO/Mailing.php, function getRecipients

If you are patching it, can you please:

1. Add it as an option maybe in the Include / Exclude Groups/Mailing page. You'll also need to store it in the DB to remember the value (new column in the civicrm_mailing table). The default should be to only send to the "primary" email address.

2. If the above option is set, include all email addresses for all contacts that are not explicitly excluded

I suspect the above is a 10-20 hour project. I'm not sure if we have any constraints / hashes based only on contact id? if so, we'll need to fix those

Hi,

What about making the "use for bulk mailing" a checkbox? (at a db level civicrm_email.is_bulkmail should be ok to have several checked for the same contact)

@lobo, think it could work to only alter the UI or that's going to fubar things down the line?
