Increase field lengths for custom fields?

Is there a way to increase the field length of custom data fields?  I have a few custom data fields where the label is long enough but the actual data content field needs to be longer so all text entered in the field can be viewed all at once.

increase length of custom field where? in the DB or the html form?

if html form, u'll need to customize the template. instructions here:
