We have recently moved to using contact subtypes - previously we had a subtype field that was not often set by users, but we do have some data.

We want to batch update our contacts to give them the right sub-types.

There is no way to give a sub-type as an update field but I have noticed that when you use a profile that has a data item on it that belongs to only one subtype the record is updated to that subtype. We use this on membership forms and it works when updating too.

But when bulk updating form a search profiles with a contact subtype specific field cannot be selected.

Is this intended?
Can I get round it?
How else do I bulk update the contact sub-type?

You could try using contact import.

First export the contact ids of all the records and the current subtype you want to change.

In the export file update the subtypes to the value you want.

Then import the file using the "Update" under "for duplicate contacts".

We've used this approach for other data but not specifically subtype.

Try a one or two record test first.
