debug error: paypal ipn return 500.shtml

Using paypal standard i'm not getting confirmations (ie. pending transactions).  drupal errorlog shows: sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/ipn.php?reset=1&contactID=1&contributionID=15&module=contribute as the offending address.  using mutli-site.  I can't find any entries in the civicrm logfile (in the /files directory.)  any suggestions on how to debug?

Can you check the server error logs?

Resolved!
yes, I had no civicrmlog error.  Apache had an error: Premature end of script headers: ipn.php and warned that group permission allowed write in the sites directory.  I fixed the permission and the script worked.  go figure ...
