Event with fee and no fee option
December 31, 2007, 03:48:19 pm
I have events that charge a fee for non-members to attend, and no charge for members. I wanted to set it up using the "honor system" -- event is available on public pages (no need to login), and two registration options are available, one with a fee, and one with $0.

The problem is that on the frontend, the payment fields (credit card, etc) are visible and required, even if someone selects the $0 option. I thought I remembered reading that in a coming release there will be efforts to correct that, so that a $0 fee value selected will allow the user to bypass the payment fields. However I haven't been able to track that down in the wiki to confirm. If it's not been considered yet, I want to vote for its inclusion, as it probably is a common situation.

In the meantime, has anyone developed a workaround or hack for this situation? I'm inclined to do two separate events -- a member (no fees) and non-member (with fees) version. This is not ideal, as it means admin staff have to monitor two lists to obtain the list of registrants. Just wondering if anyone has a better structure in place.

We do this for contributions and memberships, but do not do it for event (as yet). If you feel this is important, please file an issue and we'll potentially do this in 2.1

I think a related meta issue which encompasses the above is displaying a different "amount set" / "event config" based on "contact type". So a member automatically gets the same event with no amount option while non-members need to select an amount. this issue is a bit more complicated to handle, but i suspect is much more useful :)

Having control over what fee options are visible based on membership status/type would be ideal. But as a first step, bypassing the payment controls for $0 fee options would be very useful and seemingly important. I'll file an issue.

I agree, shouldn't process through the payment module if the event fee is $0.
