My organization vs. donor organization
December 31, 2007, 05:28:45 pm
I'm new to CiviCRM, and I'm trying to figure out how to get some basic setup stuff done.  One of the first things is to create the membership signup pages where contacts can sign up for membership, and in order to do that, I have to create my membership types.  As part of creating my types, I have to specify the organization that the membership is for.  What I'm confused about is the organization info and where I enter it.  I don't see anywhere to enter the name of my organization.  To me, it looks like the only place I can enter a new organization is where I would enter an org that would be a donor to my organization, not my own that is receiving the donations.  Can someone explain to me where I put the info for my organization, and how/where that is different from entering a donor organization?

Thanks.

You will need to create a new organization using the "New Organization" link in the CiviCRM Shortcuts block (or CiviCRM Dashboard). The link on the demo site is:

http://demo.civicrm.org/drupal/civicrm/contact/add?ct=Organization&reset=1

Hi Wonder95 - I'm not sure if you had the same issue that I had or not, but try as I might, I just could not seem to figure this out without help.  I thought of things as organizations and assign members, but it seems to work the reverse.  Thanks to Ray Seaman, he pointed out:

(1) Setup organizations first as David Said
(2) Click on CiviMember and then in the first paragraph, click on: create or modify Membership Types here (click on the here).
(3) Setup a new membership type and then *** pick the organization the membership type belongs to *** with the search button.  Or you can change organizations if editing membership types.

I guess that this means that each membership type belongs to one and only one organization.  I'm still not sure I have this exactly right and my mind does not seem to work this way, but we have managed to get memberships assigned to specific organizations with this method.

Note: You can also get to the above through Administer CiviCRM / CiviMember / Membership Types.
