Major BUG! cannot save any information on individual contact screen

I am working on Civicrm 3.2.4. installed with drupal 6.20. A clean install from scratch and have just created my first few test contact records. I am not able to save any changes to the core fields of the contact screen.

When I hit save after entering the Edit screen, the sreen does not return to the summary page, it just stays on the edit screen and the URL returned when I hit the save button is just

civicrm/contact/add

and there is no little yellow message saying "Your Individual contact record has been saved. "

Can't think where to begin to debug this - it is just wrong entirely, and I have done no custom changes of this install at all, it is completely new form scratch.

This functionality is not the same on the organisation records - I am able to go in Edit and then Save changes and get back to the summary screen with those changes saved.

Please advise - I have searched forum but nothing similar found,

might be worth upgrading to civi v3.3.5 and see if it still happens

I have upgraded today to latest version 3.3.5 and this has solved this problem. However I now have no drop down menu links working across the top - nothing under the drop down menus at all, if I put in the URL manually will go to the correct page.

Most unusual, I have never had anything like this happen before. any ideas again for troubleshooting appreciated,

I have solved the problem of the top civic black menu not dropping down by going to Drupal/admin/performance and clicking on optimize Javascript files. I  had already optimized CSS as I was having the problem of too many css sheets in use for older IE browsers (they limit it to 30) but once I also optimized the JS files, then the drop down menu links re-appeared.
