It should work on the same site but no connection tool is available AFAIK to connect these two systems, so they will remain essentially separate. CiviCRM does synch it's contacts with the Joomla user table, but it doesn't seem that will connect these two tools much. As far as I can tell.

The user profiles can be integrated, yes, but there is no easily available extension for this. It requires customization. Our company completed a major integration of JomSocial with CiviCRM/CiviEvents in late August 2011. Much of the CiviEvents functionality has been brought to the frontend of Joomla and blended into JomSocial.  The site is a Volunteer Community run by Activate Good, a nonprofit located in Raleigh, NC with a mission to help connect volunteers with other nonprofits in our area.

The way we handled the user profiles is that everyone comes into the system through CiviCRM profile forms. We integrated the synchronization of their profile data with JomSocial Profile Types extension (JSPT), plus some creative uses of the Admin Approval for particular profile types and a JomSocial welcome extension. We used normal Joomla registration steps like email account validation to trigger the synchronization of data to avoid hacking JomSocial or CiviCRM for user integration.

So to get the groups to sync from one platform to the other we need to install both.i assume.  Any tips on configuring it correctly?

I'm very curious about this too.  I'm running the latest CiviCRM 4.0.8 and JomSocial 2.2 on Joomla 2.5.0 CMS.  Is there a good way to sync all of them up?  It's for a local Mountain biking organization.  I appreciate your response!!

what does "sync them all up" mean? -- the devil is in the details
the links above will allow you to sync access control groups to the respective civi and jomsocial groups. which could be used to keep that particular piece in sync together. but it doesn't sync at any other level.

Well I was wondering about syncing up User Profiles and setting, Calendar Events, stuff like.  So I need to install both CiviCRM Sync and JomSocial Sync, correct?  Thanks!
