General CC auth question
January 04, 2008, 09:11:18 am
I'm wondering what's so special about services like authorize.net.  If an organization already has a merchant account why couldn't that organization hook up a modem to their CiviCRM box to simulate a terminal and run the transactions at night and 'cut out the middle man'?  Looks like there was something called CCVS included with RH9.  Or I wonder if there is a serial port on the actual terminal.  Maybe one could use expect to interact with it.   if there no way of avoiding these services is there a clear winner in this realm?

Thanks!
Peter

The main thing that authorize.net (and similar)lets you do is verify/process the CC transactions in real-time.

The main problem I see (off the top of my head) with your plan is that you will have to store the CC numbers and other info till you process them that night. The storing of this info opens you up to all sorts of security problems and might be in violation of your contract with bank with which you have the merchant account.

You might also look at Paypal.  For several years, customers have not had to join Paypal to use credit cards through the Paypal interface.

Yes PayPal could also work, after all they are just another CC processor. Depending on the level of account you have they might have a lower monthly or processing fee.

But I beleive that the original poster was trying to bypass the entire online processing step and not have to pay that fee.

Maybe his merchant bank has some type of deal with a processing company that can help them.
