Tags are not available, or are they?
April 06, 2011, 05:19:23 am
When i read the 3.4 documentation at this page:
http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC40/Tags
I read the following line:
Quote
Tags are not available for use with other types of records such as activities or events.

However, when I go to create a new tag:
http://sandbox.civicrm.org/civicrm/admin/tag?action=add

I see 3 options in the field "Used for":
1. Contacts
2. Activities
3. Cases

This would make me think the documentation is outdated and it IS possible to assign tags to other types of records.
BUT, when i go create a new activity, in this case a meeting:
http://sandbox.civicrm.org/civicrm/activity/add?action=add&reset=1&cid=53&selectedChild=activity&atype=1

I see a field "tags".
When I click this field I see a little description telling me:
Quote
Type in a partial or complete name of an existing tag

I know for sure that there is a tag "major donor" in the sandbox install.
So I start typing "maj......" but the field doesn't auto fill or give me a list with possibilities.

Here is the ultimate question:
- Is the documentation correct and we can't assign tags to activities and cases
- Is the documentation outdated and we can (lets hope) assign tags to other record types i.e. activities and cases but the auto fill like suggested is not yet working

Any thoughts on this one?
Johan.

I know see that the field "tags" in the activity screen in fact is a tag set itself.
Still I'm confused since the docs say you can't add tags to activities and cases, but when I create a new tag or tag set I can assign it to activities and cases in the "Used for" field.
Any clarification would be great!
Thanks in advance,
Johan.

"tag functionality" for cases and activites was added in v3.3. v3.4 has improvements with regard to tags and searches (for cases and activities)

would be great if you can update the documentation to reflect this

for issues / bugs, can you reproduce on our sandbox machine (http://sandbox.civicrm.org/) and if so, please file an issue along with steps to reproduce

thanx

When it comes to tags there are 2 concepts in CiviCRM: Static tags and Tagsets.
Static tags allows user / admin to select predefined tags, like the one you added using http://sandbox.civicrm.org/civicrm/admin/tag?action=add

Tagset allows you to group tags and add tags dynamically ( free tagging ), you can create a tagset using http://sandbox.civicrm.org/civicrm/admin/tag?action=add&reset=1&tagset=1

I think you are trying to search static tags in tagset, hence you are not getting any result.
