Return to Sender / Bad Address?
April 07, 2011, 02:03:54 pm
I've been searching and I can't find any setting that will indicate bad addresses from mailings that are returned to sender.

I don't want to delete the address, or the contact, in case we reconnect with the constituent, as a means to verify that it's the same person.

But I don't want to send another mailing to them accidentally.

I suppose I could use the 'do not mail' privacy setting - but that doesn't really make sense.

Am I missing something?

Thanks

Keith - There isn't a "setting" for this (and I'm kind of surprised that  this hasn't come up in the past - at least as far as I know). One approach that might work is to add a new "Location Type" for this - "Bad Address" from Administer > Option Lists > Location Types. Maybe combine that w/ Do Not Mail which will ensure that contact is not included in Mailing Label output.

Thanks Dave - I think I will try that approach - and it does make sense to me that a checkbox or something be worked into contact record setup "is this a valid address?" or the like - or the opposite "mail returned, bad address" whatever.  Then depending on how that box is marked it would automatically set 'do not mail' on that record.

Sort of like "is deceased" - that should automatically trigger all the do not contact buttons.  In my opinion. :)

Keith - What's the purpose of retaining bad / invalid addresses in your DB?

For identification if those individuals turn back up.

I don't want to delete their records, have them turn up interested again a year after relocating across the street or across the country, and not have any data on them.  I want to be able to plug them right back in "Oh yes - I have a John Doe right here - but it shows a bouncing address on Main Street in Cincinnati OH - is that you?  Great, I'll just update your record now, and thanks for getting back in touch with us"
