I've read a lot about Civimail and that it's almost impossible on a shared server.

So, I can do without it.

But I have been using the YANC newsletter component with Joomla on other sites, and it has been working really well.

Is there a possibility of a bridge between YANC and Civicrm? For example, an autoimport of contacts with certain tags or in certain groups to newsletter lists?

Yes, it should be possible to build a bridge between YANC and CiviCRM. It will need to be a community contribution. You might also want to investigate CiviSMTP for mass mailing via CiviCRM with minimal configuration. Note that CiviSMTP is a paid service. You can get more info by searching for it on the forums
