Relational Memberships Updated by Indvidual Memberships (Beta 3)

Hi, I am trying to figure out if I'm running into a Civi 4 bug or intended functionality. We have a membership with an employer of relationship that gets applied on an organizational membership form (creates organization contact and indv. contact). The result is a membership by relationship for the user due to their employee of status. If that same user tries to fill out an individual membership form (separate membership type and contribution page). No additional membership records are added. The existing record is just changed. We end up with an 'individaul membership' by relationship. Was wondering if this was intended or not.

Leo - I think this behavior is a result of the "Membership Upsell" feature added during the 3.4 / 4.0 cycle:

Is the individual accessing the contribution page anonymously, or are they logged in? (I'm not sure if the behavior is different but more details are helpful.)  During the spec'ing of the above issue there was some back and forth about desired behavior for anonymous user with an existing membership (whether their existing membership should be automatically updated or a new membership created). Ultimately I think the decision was that most organizations don't expect their members to hold multiple memberships with the same membership organization - so the behavior should be to upgrade the existing membership.

Note the "with the same membership organization" point here. I "think" if your set up your Individual membership type to connect it with a different membership organization (i.e. create another org contact = Open Media Fdtn-Individuals and link to that membership type) then the above steps should result in 2 memberships. If it doesn't that is definitely a bug and the issue should be reopened.

Dave is correct. If a contact has one membership with an organization, and then buys another, the type of the second membership is designed to replace the first. The work-around in case you need more than one concurrent membership is to attach the membership types that can be held at the same time to different membership organization contact records, perhaps with very similar names. Hope this helps, and please post back here if the work-around doesn't work.

I did a bit more testing and I think it's occurring as you've both described. I was testing as an anonymous user that then gets an account. From there I was testing as logged in. The first individual (membership by membership) membership creates a new membership. Subsequent individual memberships update the existing membership. A new organizational membership (membership by relationship) creates a new membership (granting 2). Subsequent organizational memberships then overwrite the organizational membership. In the rare user case that you delete the individual membership and then re submit a new individual membership it updates the by relationship membership to the type of the non-relationship membership. After such an occurrence any further organizational memberships are not recorded. I'll look into this some more on Monday. This seems like a pretty rare fringe user case at any rate. Thanks guys.
