Upgrade Joomla 1.5 and Civi 3.3.5 to Joomla 1.6 and Civi 4.0
April 12, 2011, 07:55:52 pm
In deploying a new site it has become apparent that we really need ACL control in Civi. Since we've developed so far in Joomla (and this is what the client wants) we will probably need to bite the bullet and upgrade from J1.5/C3.3.5 to J1.6/C4.0.

I've found a component for Joomla that will upgrade it from 1.5 to 1.6 (well... technically migrate) but I don't know what order of operations I should do when trying this. I can find "lots" of stuff about upgrading either Civi OR Joomla but not both. If there are resources out there that describe this a pointer to them would be greatly appreciated. Also this question is based on my reading of the 3.4/4.0 notes that imply to me they are really the same thing with the exception of the UF stuff. So...

Should I upgrade Civi from 3.3.5 to 3.4 on Joomla 1.5 THEN upgrade Joomla to 1.6 and THEN re-upgrade Civi to 4.0

OR

Should I upgrade Joomla from 1.5 to 1.6 and then IMMEDIATELY upgrade Civi from 3.3.5 to 4.0.

Or something else entirely... :)

Matt

P.S. While there will be plenty of backups... I'm hoping to do this only once. :)

I would go with the latter option:

Upgrade Joomla from 1.5 to 1.6 and then IMMEDIATELY upgrade Civi from 3.3.5 to 4.0. This path should work

Sorry to jump onto this thread but a sort of related question:

Due to time scales I've had to get on with running up a data set in Joomla 1.5 and CCRM 3.3.5. We also need ACL so want to move to 4 as soon as availalble.

We haven't done anything in Joomla! yet in this anticipation. Is there an upgrade route that allows me to to do a fresh install of J 1.6 and CCRM 4 and then move the database from the 3.3.5 system to the new 4.0 system. I'd obviously want to take the custom fields, type lists and data but also keep the schema changes in the 4.0 system.

Can I just copy the 3.3.5 database over the top of the 4.0 database and then run an upgrade script?
Or would I have do sql dumps of the relevant tables?

Hoping you can help.

(PS - the only reason of doing this is to avoid the 1.5 to 1.6 upgrade as I'd rather do a fresh install - especially seeing as we've not set anything up in Joomla yet.)

try the following:

1. install j1.6

2. install civi 4.0

3. fix the settings files (components/com_civicrm/civicrm.settings.php, administrator/components/com_civicrm/civicrm.settings.php) and adjust the CIVICRM_UF_DSN to point to the 3.3 database

4. run the upgrade script
