Unable to locate "trash"?
April 13, 2011, 12:56:09 pm
I am working off version 2.2.8.

We have run into an issue multiple times where if someone creates an account with an e-mail address, then makes a mistake and wants to start over, they are unable to use the same e-mail address again. If I "delete" their record and try to create an account it gives an error message stating that the e-mail is already in use.

I believe that this is because if I "delete" something, it is not really being permanently deleted and in order to permanently delete these items there must be a function SOME WHERE in our version. I just have yet to find it. Any suggestions?

You need to check your Permissions if you do not see a 'search in trash' in the Adv Search screen - also if you have permission to 'delete permanently' then you should have that option from the 'actions' dropdown.

Not sure if you are pointing out tht even with that permission you don't get a 'delete permanently' from the Contact Screen - seems to me there should be one but not spotting it on demo.

Or for people with Permanent Delete permission may be the Delete Contact "Are you sure" should have a Delete Permanently option?

I logged in as an admin and looked at both of the places you suggested. I am still not getting an option for search or drop-down.

When I delete a contact I get the following:

"Are you sure you want to Delete...all related data will be permanently removed..."

However, I am finding that in the case of the e-mails the system is not deleting those through this function. And the crazy thing is that I can search for them and they do not show up, but if you try to re-use an e-mail that you have supposedly "permanently" deleted, it says it is already in use.

Thanks for the information.

take a look at Demo - on the Adv Search there is the option near the bottom of the Basic Criteria (ie top) section where it says 'search in trash'

if you aren't seeing that then it is Permissions I expect.

If you are seeing that then you will probably find you have a load of contacts there that you might want to delete as it sounds as if the matching rules are applying to Trash as well, which may need to be a Feature Request.

v2.2 did not have a "move to trash" function. Contacts that are deleted are always removed from the contact table - there is no trash feature.

I think you might be hitting an old bug (vague recollection) related to associated records NOT be removed from the table which links contacts to Drupal / Joomla users (civicrm_uf_match) when a contact record is deleted. You really should upgrade :-) - but if you absolutely can't and need to resolve this I would investigate (using MySQL queries or phpMyAdmin) whether there are rows in that table where contact_id column value matches deleted contacts. I "think" the uf_name column in that table in 2.2 stored the email address of the associated user - so that might help you find the problem rows.

It's all good. I appreciate any response! I am still learning this system. I started this job after the other person left, there was no training provided at all. Trial by fire.

When I got here and started investigating, I found out that we are so behind on upgrades, I'm not even sure if I can upgrade. This project is looking like a re-install, so I am trying to work with what we have for now.

Thank you both ever so much, I will check on what was suggested and see what I can figure out!
