Using Joomla 1.5.23 & Civi 3.4b3:

When I create an "Event List" menu item, there are no options to select type/date range of events or otherwise configure it. On the actual page created it does list events, but clicking on any link (event name, the "(more info..)" link etc) just triggers the dowload of an .ics file rather than taking you to the page.

I can't remember how it works normally but you'd expect to (a) have some choice about which events it lists and (b) when clicking on an event be taken to the event pages not just sent an .ics file.
