Suggestions for forum integration?
April 14, 2011, 06:02:49 am
I've been tasked with finding an appropriate component for member forums on a site running Joomla 1.5.22 and CiviCRM 3.3.5. In the past I've used Kunena for another Joomla site, but I'm not sure if that will integrate with CiviCRM - essentially I need to restrict access to members as specified in CiviCRM. Looking for suggestions on what forums people have had success with integrating, please note that I'm not a programmer so I won't be able to do any fancy coding. Thanks!

I'm in the process of doing the same thing with the same Joomla and CiviCRM versions as you. I've installed Kunena and turned off profiles as there's no Kunena integration for CiviCRM.

I'm just doing very simple access control - anyone will be able to view the forum, only registered members can post. I'm using the CiviAuthentication plugin ( http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC33/Joomla+CiviCRM+Membership+Authentication+Plugin ) to only let Joomla users connected to an active and valid CiviCRM membership to login and post.

For more advanced AC other than manually assigning users as Joomla administrators to moderate forums, without coding perhaps some of the frontend AC add-ons for J1.5 might help ( http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/access-a-security/frontend-access-control ) - I've not tried any myself.

Thanks. I guess I should just try it out and see what happens! I'm not too worried about setting up moderators - these discussions will be small and non-controversial.  It's been a while since I set up Kunena, but sounds like it's probably the best option here.

Hi,

Have you tried JFusion? I use this to integrate PHPBB and Joomla - haven't got round to trying it with Civi yet, although if you can get civi and joomla to sync users then Jfusion would onwardly sync them from joomla to a forum.

Let me know if it works, if you try it.

Cheers,

Dave
