Joomla upgraded from 1.5.22 to 1.6.3 but cant get CiviCRM to upgrade to 4.0

I was running Joomla 1.5.22 and CiviCRM 3.2.4. I backed up everything before I started.

I upgraded Joomla to 1.6.3 and when complete following their upgrade instructions, I did not see CiviCRM at all as a component (it's still in the old files, so I still have access to if need to).

I then tried to follow the CiviCRM 4.0 upgrade instructions.
Step 3 doesn't exactly match Joomla 1.6 menu structure, but when I tried to upgrade, I keep getting this meesage:

Error connecting to the server: failed to open stream: no suitable wrapper could be found
Invalid URL

I've tried:

/joomla/administrator/components/com_installer/component/com_civicrm/ and http://www.desmoinesdna.com/joomla/administrator/components/com_installer/component/civicrm-4.0.0-joomla.zip

Any suggestions?
