my host told me that they do not allow access to the php.ini file, and that they themselves cannot increase the values for me because I am in a shared hosting environment.

However, they did say I could attempt to do this via .htaccess.

And how would I go about doing that?

Code: [Select]
php_value memory_limit 64M
php_value register_globals off
php_value max_execution_time 60

just add to the bottom of your .htaccess file.

Could I put it alone in an .htaccess file?

Tried it.

Didn't work.

Host is suggesting I move to a VPS set up, but I really don't think I should have to go through all that just to run this CRM.

Disappointed, but don't know what to do now short of moving to another host, or finding another solution.

VPS definitely gives you more control. If you need the full functionality of CiviMail, this is likely the best way to go. However, there are many of us who use Civi on shared hosting. Now, not all shared hosting is created equal, and I've abandoned a few precisely because they didn't give me enough control over php settings.

You said it didn't work. What didn't work? The install? The php setting override? Did you run phpinfo() to see if the values you entered into the htaccess file took?

Days later, I wanted to come and report on my progress.

I took the web host's suggestion and set up a VPS server with my own resources, and after much trial and error I got CiviCRM installed and running. I had to dump my development version because the move to the production server proved too much for my brain to manage.

I did a clean install and rebuilt my forms and well, I am here to report after I made your suggested change to the php.ini file, CiviCRM ran without the blank page error.

However, I should point out to whoever is interested, that we shouldn't need such intensive resources to run this... I don't know how many people have $600/year to spend on their own chunk of server resources. I think the CiviCRM developers ought to maintain a version that can install and run in virtual hosting situation as many people are in this sort of set up.

Please accept my humble thanks for your suggestions and assistance.

Blessings and Good Things,

I dont think our main goal or focus has been to get CiviCRM to run on shared hosting. As a CRM its a pretty heavy piece of software, so getting it to run efficiently on a shared server will  be a challenge and project by itself

That said, as an open source project, we'd be happy to work with the community / other members who want to make this happen. As with everything else, i suspect there will be a tradeoff to balance performance and functionality. Folks who want to make this happen would need to be pretty good at PHP and MySQL
