Paying a deposit and then the balance on events

I'd very much like to give users the option of signing up for events by paying a deposit of say 10% of the total amount due and then paying the rest over a period of up to 12 months. Ideally I'd like Civi to keep track of how much they have paid and how much they still owe and chase them for outstanding payment at set times.

Can anyone tell me if that is even possible and point me in the right direction if it is?

Any advice very gratefully received!

I have similar needs and am working on a stop-gap measure while the MIH... happens. I'm working on using some custom fields and hooks to replicate this behavior.

Donald - I'm having a difficult time understanding exactly what is entailed in the current MIH campaign to decide if it makes sense to ask my client to support it.

I'm new to the whole MIH model - the goal is reached, is there a roadmap/timeline for rolling out these new features?

The MIH's are on a release basis, the current set of MIH's here:

are for the 4.1 release which is expected 3-5 months from the 4.0 release. In very few cases, we squeeze it into a 3.4.x release (primarily depending on the size of the MIH and the timeline of the sponsor(s))

The accounting MIH is very large, and hence will be in 4.1 (if the target is met). Please feel free to ask more questions and we can clarify and maybe synthesize it into a blog post.

We'll also have a 4.1 roadmap / feature set in the next few weeks here:

at which point we'll have a better idea on what things will be part of 4.1
