Joomla Upgrade of CiviCRM to 4.0
April 27, 2011, 08:47:28 am
I ran my first upgrade of Joomla! from 1.5 to 1.6 and then CiviCRM from 3.3.1 to 4.0.

It would appear to me that the wiki is wrong as far as the part about Uninstall Component because when I tried this, anyhow, CiviCRM was not there to uninstalled. Makes sense b/c the 3.3.1 version is not compatible with 1.6.

Seems that step should be removed from the wiki.

Can someone confirm that? Then I will do it.

I think you will have to uninstall before you upgrade to 1.6. Can you update the docs.

Thanks

I ran this again now on a live 1.5.21 site. I did not uninstall CiviCRM after the upgrade to J 1.6. I used the method suggested on the official Migrating from Joomla 1.5 to Joomla 1.6 directions, i.e., to use jUpgrade to upgrade to J 1.6. After that, the CiviCRM upgrade worked fine.

Futhermore, I am not sure why the wiki says to put CiviCRM initially into

Code: [Select]
JOOMLA_1.6.x_ROOT/administrator/components/com_installer/component/com_civicrm.
Seems to me it should go in

Code: [Select]
JOOMLA_1.6.x_ROOT/tmp
as during a normal install.

Can anyone confirm both of these points?

yes, should definitely be in /tmp
thought i had changed that in previous docs

and you don't ever really need to uninstall. civi will install on top of the prior version.
i'm pretty sure i made those corrections in the docs for a previous version. seems like they got lost at some point.

i'll take care of updating the docs.

the only thing that's tricky is handling the 1.5>1.6 upgrade along with the civi upgrade. i'm inclined to simply not address the joomla upgrade at all, and just discuss the Civi piece.

I was thinking about this also and the only problem is that most people (I presume) will use the recommended jUpgrade method and then install CiviCRM 4.0 into jupgrade/ and then when they do the last step to go live, they will not realize that they must update their civicrm.settings.php files to remove jupgrade/

So I do think a note about that would be helpful.

Hershel -
I updated that wiki doc. Can you take a look and review when you get a chance.
In addition to these specific comments, I streamlined the steps a bit. There were a few things that were not necessary or were outdated that I removed.

I updated this wiki page http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC40/Batch+Geocoding+Script with a URL for Joomla.

What's interesting is that the first time I ran it I got this:

Code: [Select]
Warning: require_once(/home/somesite/www/www/jupgrade/administrator/components/com_civicrm/civicrm.settings.php) [function.require-once]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/somesite/www/www/administrator/components/com_civicrm/civicrm/civicrm.config.php on line 2

Fatal error: require_once() [function.require]: Failed opening required '/home/somesite/www/www/jupgrade/administrator/components/com_civicrm/civicrm.settings.php' (include_path='.:/usr/local/php5/lib/php') in /home/somesite/www/www/administrator/components/com_civicrm/civicrm/civicrm.config.php on line 2

I remove "jupgrade" from the administrator/components/com_civicrm/civicrm/civicrm.config.php file and then of course it works.

Yet another "gotcha" for upgraders...
