How long for Paypal Pro Recurring to complete Pending transaction?

I have configured Paypal Pro+Recurring for auto-renewal memberships.

Yesterday at 4pm ran a live recurring auto-renewal membership transaction in the amount of $1 and it was updated to Complete status within seconds.  We have configured the IPN settings for Paypal correctly.

Yesterday at 8pm, we ran a live recurring auto-renewal membership transaction in the amount of $1 and it is still pending as of 9am the next day (more than 12 hours have elapsed).

Today again at 9am, we ran a we ran a live recurring auto-renewal membership transaction in the amount of $2 and it is still pending as of 45 minutes later. 

I am confused why Paypal seems to be able to complete certain transactions almost immediately and why other remain pending.

How long has 'completed' status taken in your experience with Paypal?

It appears the 'completed' can take up to 24 hours.  It's my guess that the update happens sometime around 5pm (USA time).  I don't know what Paypal's schedule is, but maybe I will ask.  The good news is that even a pending transaction will result in a membership receipt being sent.

This is an old thread, but it turned up in a search I was doing in an effort to understand paypal recurring contributions that are set to "pending."

If you do not set FAILEDINITAMTACTION or set it to CancelOnFailure, PayPal creates the recurring payment profile. However, PayPal places the profile into a pending status until the initial payment completes. If the initial payment clears, PayPal notifies you by Instant Payment Notification (IPN) that it has activated the pending profile. If the payment fails, PayPal notifies you by IPN that it has canceled the pending profile.

So, I'm now interpreting the handful of pending contributions in the database as indications that the initial payment may have failed.
